A Point of Emphasis

As I was taking these photos I realized that I understand the aesthetics of photograph, but I struggle with utilizing that aesthetic to create a story. I can create a well framed image, but it might lack substance. This pushed me to really think outside of my normal mode of photograph. In this photo I tried to capture the irony of the “NO PARKING” sign with the parked car. This one struggles to have a single point of emphasis because the two aspects of the frame are needed to understand its meaning.

With this image I tried to make the audience ask a lot of questions. I was hoping to make it seem menacing through color grading. It might be hard to tell that it is underwear and if I had caught it from a side angle, or from a higher angle, that might be more clear.

This tree was just lying on the side of the road and it has been there for months. This image has a lot of story because the subject itself is a mystery to me. I was fascinated by how out of place it looked especially since it had fake snow on it and we haven‘t had a lot of snow this winter.

  1. I do like the clear framing, and agree that you have two points of emphasis, though they are framed in such a way that they are obviously the focus. Perhaps a different angle where the sign is directly in front or behind the car would make the emphasis point more narrow/centralized. I do appreciate the irony or contradiction.

  2. I really like what you did with the affinity and more greyscale tone of this shot. That being said, it does make it difficult to see the garment as the most important thing in the shot, which I actually thought was a hat until you pointed out it was underwear. A closer shot or coloring the underwear more brightly than the res…
